Edenderry 2nd XV also came away with a bonus point win in their game on Sunday last in the Leinster League at home to Enniscorthy.
Edenderry dominated the game from start to finish, both in the pack and in the backs and should really have secured the bonus point earlier in the game but made hard work of things for themselves with quite a few handling errors and in allowing the Enniscorthy pack to turn over far to much possession in the tight.
Edenderry started the game very well and the pack dominated in the line-out and in the scrum in particular, where they drove the away side off the majority of their own put ins and they made huge ground on a number of occasions with mauls which the away side just could not live with. Shane Melia, who was immense yet again,=A0 was the first to touch down with a try from one such maul as Edenderry began to take control. Stephen Cummins added the conversion with ease and from the kick off Derry were straight back up the field putting pressure on the opposition line. The next score came from a penalty by Cummins whose accuracy with the boot is becoming a huge asset to the team. Edenderry continued to dominate possession as the half wore on and it wasnt long before they added another score when Dave Keenan took the ball on from Finbar Kilaly at outhalf, Keenan made good ground before off loading to Colm Dunne at second center who popped the ball to David Hurst on the wing. Hurst still had a fair bit to do to get to the line but he put the head down and burst through a challenge before scoring in the corner.
The second wasnt all plain sailing for the seconds however as Enniscorthy uped their game and enjoyed a fair amount the ball. Perhaps the homeside had taken the foot off the pedal far to early but the try in corner after a ruck for the away side certainly stirred them back into life. They got straight back into the game having spent the early part of the half in their own 22, and after quick ball Willie Crampton burst through the line to score a fine try. Stephen Cummins added the conversion and soon after added another penalty to put Edenderry well out of reach. The homeside were now in line for a bonus point needing only one more try and so they ran the ball at every given opportunity. They did create a number of chances but Enniscorthy tackled hard and did their best to keep the try count at 3 and it looked like that was how it was going to end until right at death when the Derry pack put pressure on an opposition line out and ended up driving the away sides pack back over their own line, the ball then spilled out of the ruck and Colm Carter was the first to react to get the final try. Cummins again converted and Edenderry won the game 32 - 5.
