Edenderry 2nds off to a great start

Edenderry seconds had a great start to their season on Sunday last with a great win at home to Longford in the Midland League.

The visitors were first on the scoreboard after 5 minutes from a penalty but after that Edenderry uped their efforts and the tempo of the game. Edenderry pack took control in the scrums, winning many against the head and the front row of Gill, Quinn and Quirke had the upper hand throughout the match. Edenderry were level through a penalty from Conlan and shortly after took the lead after more good work by the forwards and the lively backline were released and then awarded a pentaly for an infringement at the break down.
Strong running in the forwards by Donlan and Rushe took the game to the visitors while Killally got good ball to Cooney and McCormack in the center.
Quick ball along the backline after a strong scrum got the ball to right winger Holt who beat a couple of tackles and after a strong run was just forced into touch just short of the try line.
Just before halftime quick thinking from Edenderry scrumhalf Conlan tapped a penalty and with a fine individual run scored a try which he then converted to leave the score 13-3.
The second half saw Longford put the pressure on and some great defense by Killally, Cooney and co. in the backline stopped the visitors from getting in. It was the home side who scored again when Hickey supporting the backline raced through a gap in the Longford line to score under the posts, Conlan converted.
McCormack was next to get over the line when more good work in the pack brought the ball towards the Longford line and quick ball to the backs saw Killally delay the pass to McCormack and put him in the gap for a nice score.
Longford came back strong and for some 15-20 minutes were camped inside the home 22' but great credit to the defense of the home team with backs and forwards putting in termendous try saving tackles kept them out. The pressure by the visitors finally paid off with a try against the right hand post which was converted.
Edenderry were not finished and uped the game to get back down in to the Longford half and it was Hickey again that popped up out on the wing and ran in a fine try under the post to finish the game off.
A great opening display by the home team for a deserved 32-10 win. Henchie, Furey and Quinn well all impressive on the day in the pack and Conlan at scrum half and Cooney at centre were in fine form in the back line.
