Edenderry 1stXV fail to capitalise.
Edenderry 1st XV who travelled to Balrothery to take on Balbriggan on Sunday
last failed to capitalise in the 1st half of the 2B league clash with the home
team. Edenderry proved to be the stronger of the two with wind assistance
in the 1st half. While Edenderry dominated both scrums and lineouts, their
failure to narrowly convert 3 out of 5 penalties proved to be their downfall.
Dan Maloney, Shane Melia and Con Hogan led the attack during this time.
The home team who were under intense pressure for the first half made
two brief incursions into the Edenderry half which resulted in two tries.
Edenderry’s inexperience being exposed for the second week running. The
score of 10 - 6 to the home side was not a true reflection of the play up to that
point. Wayne Campbell was held up short of the line and forced into touch just
before half time with the home side then clearing their lines.
Edenderry started strong in the second half but failed to convert very positive
play in to scores. While the play ebbed and flowed between both sides
Balbriggan scored two penalties with out reply. With ten minutes to go
Edenderry were unlucky not to score. Undettered, Edenderry continued to
press, and were rewarded by a try scored by Donal Milne and converted by
Stevie Cummins. While Edenderry continue to press, the home side were
rewarded with a penalty which they duly converted.
Final score 19 1-13 to the Balbriggan.
While the entire Edenderry panel were disappointed with the result, and it
is early in the season, the team badly need to convert the chances they are
creating to get that all important first league win.
