Edenderry first XV got 2010 off to a flying start with a bonus point win against Swords at home on Sunday last
Edenderry controlled the game from the beginning and were dominant in both the scrum and line out, reducing the away side to only one visit to their 22 in the first half but Edenderry did not capitalise on having the lions share of possession and field position until the second half got underway. They did go into the break 3 points up from a Shane Kelly penalty, and they should have had another 3 but the team were perhaps a little bit rusty after the long break and at half time Swords were still in with a shout of pulling off an upset. Edenderry came out in the second half and were much more effective in terms of putting points on the board from early on. Shane Kelly made a break going down the blindside from a ruck and quick ball, which the pack produced all game long, gave Kelly the space he needed to break the line and the little pop pass he gave to Cillian Farrell on the inside was sublime, leaving Farrell with the simple task of diving over the line for the score. The conversion was missed but the try seemed to lift the Derry team, particularly the backline and from there on in the homeside really started to tick. The next score was thanks to the pack and came from a line-out in the corner which Frank Kennedy took very well, as he did for the whole game, and the Derry pack got the shove on immediately on landing and simply drove the Swords pack back over their own line and Derek Kearney at prop dived over for the score from close range. The Derry pack showed good control and technique in the drive and in the second half their domination of the scrum became even more apparent as they practically won every scrum both on their own ball and on the oppositions. It was no surprise then that the next Edenderry score came from a scrum close to the Swords line. Tom Crampton, who had a massive game at 8, picked from the base of the scrum and drew the blind side wing forward, he then off loaded to Tom Facwett at scrum half who fired the ball out the line and when winger Jack Kilmurray got his hands on it he cleverly stepped inside the defensive line to put himself through and score the try. Shane Kelly added the conversion. From the kick off Edenderry went straight back down the field and again put huge pressure on the Swords defense. They dominated possession and the pressure lead to the away side conceding a penalty right in front of the posts. Edenderry could have easily added the 3 points but at this stage they had the 4 try bonus point in mind and they choose to go for a scrum. They won the ball comfortably and again Crampton picked from the base. He didnt need any help this time around and he shrugged off a number of challenges before bursting his way over the line for a fine try to round off a man of the match performance by a player who is really on top of his game this season. Shane Kelly added the conversion and the game was all but over. Overall Edenderry were somewhat lack luster in the first half but still they always looked in control. In the second half they were very impressive with four tries and very few errors. Hopefully they can carry this for forward as if they do they will undoubtedly be in the shake up for the top spot come end of the season. Edenderrys next game is away to Wexford Wanderers and the next home game is on the 7th of February against Malahide.
