Edenderry 1st XV Put Up A Fight

Edenderry 1st xv played their first home fixture on Sunday last against division 2 side Longford in the Midland league in glorious sunshine at Coolavacouse.

Longford used the breeze well in the first half and cleared their lines well anytime Edenderry got close to scoring, with the huge boot of the Longford outhalf proving to be a massive asset.

It was the away side who put points on the board first with a try in the corner after a stolen lineout which Londford converted. Longford then added an easy penalty after sustained pressure from the big Longford pack forced Edenderry into an infringement close to the home sides 22. Longford added a second try close to half time which they failed to convert and Edenderrys points tally for the half was held to three points which came from an O'Carroll penalty late in the half.

Edenderry never stopped trying however and looked the fitter team in the warm conditions but the clever tactics and the long clearances from the Longford outhalf made life difficult for the home side. Longford added another two tries and a penalty in the second half, one very clever cross field kick catching the home side off gaurd and another from an interception, but the home side did add a try of their own after sustained pressure late on, Hurst finishing off a move that spanned a number of phases.

On the day Bisto Kelly had a good game for the home side at scrum half, both Potterton and Kearney the two Edenderry props carried the ball well and made ground as did Keenan in the second row. The scrum functioned well and Kennedy was impressive in the lineout.

No doubt the home side would have liked to start with a home win but this team did show signs that there will be plenty more to come from them in the season ahead.
