Edenderry First XV travelled away to Balbriaggan on Sunday last for their third Leinster League game of the season.
And they came away with a very important victory, by the slightest of margins, to put them one step closer to thier goal of reaching the top section of the Super Sixes this season.
It was not all plain sailing for the away side and this really was a hard fought match against a Balbriggan team who were desperate for a win to get their season back on track.
It was the home team who took the game to Edenderry early on when quick thinking from a tap penalty caught the away side napping and Balbriggan ran in from the Edenderry ten to open the scoring and put Balbriggan 5 -0 ahead. Edenderry did have a penalty chance to get themselves back into the game but the kick sailed wide and again it was the home team who added to the scoreline next with a penalty after about 30 minutes to put them further in front 8 -0 and now Edenderry were really under pressure to perform if they wanted to take something from the game.
The away side stepped up to the mark however, aided in no small part by substitutes David Keenan and Tom Mulligan later in the game and Edenderry were next to put points on the board after some tough work from the Edenderry pack saw them pick and drive and eventually bully thier way over the Balbriggan line with Captain Stephen Potterton scoring close to the homesides posts and full back Liam Holt added the conversion.
It was 8 - 7 to Balbriggan at the break and Edenderry were back in the game and they had the wind on their backs for the second half. Edenderry were their own worst enemies early in the second half however conceding a number of soft penalties one of which the Balbriggan number ten slotted and it was back to playing catch up as the away side again trailed 11 - 7.
As mentioned previously the subs bench really came to the fore with Tom Mulligan proving to be a huge addition, putting in big hits and taking the ball on well breaking tackles and Tom Fawcett at scrum half settled things at the back of the Edenderry scrum to give the away side a better platform to work off. This along with some great work in the scrum by Derek Kearney, who had the Balbriggan front row in all sorts of bother, saw Edenderry begin to the turn the screw and the pressure paid off when Edenderry again picked and drove the home side back and David Keenan got the eventual dividend with a try in the corner to put Edenderry back in front.
There was still 20 minutes to go and Edenderry did give Balbriggan chances to get back into it with a number of penalties, one of which struck the post, but the game finished 12 - 11. Edenderry could have added a few penalties of ther own but they didnt need them in the end and the team and management will undoubtedly be delighted to come away with the win.
In the forwards Captain Stephen worked tirelessly, Derek Kearney scrumaged well and had another good game and Tom Crampton continued his good vein of form. Brian O'Carroll was probably the pick of the backs and substitutes David Keenan, Tom Mulluigan and Tom Facwett really made a difference when they came on.
