Edenderry 2nd XV win Midland League
Edenderry 2nd XV 13
Edenderry travelled to Tullamore last Friday night and produced a stirring performance to
defeat the home side and win the Midland League.
It was Tullamore who opened the better with a whirlwind opening 20 minutes. Quick ball,
good handling by their young backline had Edenderry under all sorts of pressure but superb
defence limited the hosts to a single penalty conversion. During this period Gavin Murray,
Brian O’Carroll, Earl Corry and David Hurst were to the fore.
Getting a foothold in the game, Edenderry began to dominate the lineout where Colm
Carter dominated throughout, and this prevented the Tullamore maul doing the damage it
did early on. Edenderry reduced arrears when Stevie Cummins landed a penalty and they
went ahead before the break when Robbie Glennon dropped a goal. Edenderry retained the
ball well and repeatedly stretched the Tullamore defence. It was deservedly 6-3 at half-time.
The second half saw Edenderry continue where they left off before the break. The pack
were equal at scrum time where Keith O’Neill, Moo Quinn and Shane Geraghty gave them
a good platform. With the lineout also working well, they retained the ball well and good
driving by Donal Milne and Colm Carter kept the pressure on the Tullamore defence.
The all important try came with 15 minutes to go and was no more than the visitors
deserved. Good driving by the forwards allowed the backs move the ball wide and after
good handling by Padraig Foy and Brian O’Carroll set up a good ruck. Going down the blind
side Colm Carter put David Thompson in space and he cut through the Tullamore backline to
touch down. Stevie Cummins added the conversion to leave it 13-3.
Tullamore did dominate the final 15 minutes but Edenderry’s defence held firm to win
out. On the night it was a great team performance but Donal Milne, Colm Cater and Gavin
Murray led the way.
